The Bird Cage

2016

Artship Olympia

Independence Seaport Museum, Philadelphia.

"The Bird Cage" is a sculptural installation aboard the historic Cruiser Olympia from the Spanish American War. Using classic American icons, this artwork explores the identity of sailors who would have lived on the ship. The location of the piece is the officer's shower, a place reflection and self confrontation where the officer is stripped of his unifrom and left in a vulnerable state.

"The Bird Cage" questions the relationship of man and country and the use of symbols and uniforms as proud identifiers, or a masking defense. This piece is a part of the show Artship Olympia, which features the work of 14 other artists aboard the ship.
